Yamaha Factory rider Jorge Lorenzo to race with upgraded engine at Indianapolis GP – MotoGP news
Yamaha Factory Racing rider Jorge Lorenzo has decided to use the new upgraded 800cc engine for the 12th MotoGP round, the Indianapolis Grand Prix.
After testing the upgrades at Brno post-race test earlier this week, Lorenzo was pleased to see the difference in his M1.
Lorenzo said, “It is only a slight difference but for sure in Indy we will use this engine. It seems a little bit better in top speed but it is not clearly much better. But it is always good to have something extra and more than what you had and this is
the engine we will use in the next races.”
The Spanish rider has been fighting to regain the championship lead from Casey Stoner. After the last two wins bagged by Stoner, he is 32 points ahead of Lorenzo. The slight improvements and more power in the engine might give Lorenzo an extra boost to score
a victory.
The slight changes were held on the specification of the inline four-cylinder power plant of M1. The engine delivered more power in acceleration and increased top speed. The lap time was fraction of a second slower than his best effort in the qualifying
round, but an extra boost can change his race results.
Lorenzo added, “But it is a step and we just wanted to confirm the bike was going to handle the same with a bit more engine performance. With not the same effort, I put in the same time I qualified at, so it was confidence inspiring for Indy and the rest
of the season.”
While expressing his opinion he said that it has been a long time racing on 800cc prototypes and many improvements have been made on it. He added at the Brno test, although it was a good change but the not a big leap.
After making slight changes, the bike was smoother at power delivery and increased the power band of the engine. It is also expected that the M1 might get even better by the end of the season.
