Yamaha Factory’s Jorge Lorenzo shows good pace while Ben Spies struggles at Sachsenring – MotoGP
Yamaha Factory Racing riders Jorge Lorenzo and Ben Spies started the German Grand Prix race weekend on completely different notes.
In Friday’s Free Practice sessions for the eni Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland, Lorenzo kept his YZR-M1 in the top three spots while his teammate Spies struggled for better pace and finished out of the top five slots.
Lorenzo said, “I am pretty satisfied because I have improved my lap times today. I am almost faster than last year and I look forward to making another step tomorrow. We have made some changes and I feel much better on my M1; faster and more competitive!”
During the practice runs, Jorge Lorenzo found it difficult to corner in tight bends whereas the faster bends are much easy and help lose a few tenths. The turns T3 and T4 are where Lorenzo has improved the most.
In need of performance, the Spaniard desires the weather to be hotter than the first day. Favourable weather conditions will also help him to fight for a first row start.
The American rider in the Yamaha factory team, Ben Spies was searching for a good race package for Sachsenring. He also had to deal with the cold that he was suffering with. Although he improved from ninth to seventh place from first to second free practice
session but still he was not able to perform well.
Spies said, “I didn’t get my best shot at the track today, I’ve got a head cold which has left me a little fuzzy and makes it kind of hard to give it 100% and be on top form. The changing temperature from the morning to the afternoon also meant the track
conditions were pretty different to set up for.”
After getting through a tough first day at Sachsenring and no significant improvement, the American rider was heading for complete rest to gather his spirits for the second day of the race weekend.
