Yamaha WSBK Team’s Eugene Laverty claims second position at Silverstone – WSBK news
Yamaha World Superbike Team rider Eugene Laverty has secured a second place finish in race one and two at the Silverstone WSBK event.
With 40 points from the English event, he has strengthened his fourth place in the WSBK championship.
Laverty said, “I'm happy with the 40 points today. Not a victory but two second places are quite good. In race one Carlos went by me and pushed on but I had some limits with the bike so I couldn't really catch up. In the end, second place was more than enough.”
The Irish racer further added to say that he was trying hard to steam up for victory in the second race. Laverty was trying to please his injured brother John Laverty. He still hopes that his brother is pleased with a second place finish in both races at
Silverstone.
Laverty said, “I had a better second race, I changed the tyre and there was an improvement. In the later part of the race I tried to move my body position on the bike and began to close in on Carlos, but when I did, he reacted. He had the edge on us today
so he would have been extremely difficult to beat.”
Laverty’s brother John crashed at Oulton Park couple of weeks ago and sustained numerous injuries. Eugene Laverty has been able to score podium after four rounds, as his last success was at Monza Italy, where he won both the races.
The Yamaha rider started both races on a strong note. Laverty led the initial six laps in race one and race two. By the seventh lap, WSBK championship leader, Carlos Checa was able to pass Laverty and lead the race until the finish line.
Meanwhile, with Laverty’s impressive performance, Marco Melandri was not able to challenge his teammate and stood at the third place in both races. However, Melandri sustains his third position in the championship points table, behind compatriot Max Biaggi.
After a double success at Silverstone, Carlos Checa has been able to extend his lead to 62 points from 30 points. The next round of the 2011 WSBK championship takes place in Germany.
