Yamaha factory rider Jorge Lorenzo claims Honda’s gamble paid off – MotoGP news
Yamaha Factory Racing rider Jorge Lorenzo says that the risks taken by Honda have paid off well.
Since the end of the 2010 season, Honda developed a significant step ahead of its rivals.
Entering the 2011 MotoGP season, the HRC had developed a new fast gearbox that steamed up the Honda RCV to a dominating position.
Jorge Lorenzo said, “I think the Honda was extremely fast and very competitive from the last part of last year, and this year even more. They improved one step at the end of last year, and one step more by the beginning of this year.”
Lorenzo seems that it is still possible to chase Stoner in the championship.
Lorenzo added, “We won three world titles in a row, all three crowns, so it's logical that we stayed a little bit calmer and didn't take so many risks. Yamaha have won so much and they've done a great job, but at this moment in this category [Honda] are
a little bit further away at most of the tracks.”
The Spaniard further added that Stoner has won eight races along several podium finishes. The only podium he missed was at Jerez after being swept away by Valentino Rossi in a wet race. On the contrary, Yamaha have not been that strong as Lorenzo holds three
wins with a single win of Ben Spies.
Therefore, mathematically, they are in the chase after a poor performance compared to Honda. Although Yamaha have struggled a lot throughout the season but it could not overtake Honda. At present, Repsol Honda lead the manufacturer’s points table of the
season.
The Spanish rider hopes to see a miracle to help him regain his lead in the championship. However, if Stoner does not make any mistake, it is nearly impossible for Lorenzo to claim the 2011 championship.
