Question:

Yamaha outboard 1991 70hp yellow oil alert and overheat buzzer?

I recently took my boat out after storage of about 4 months. I immediately noticed that the oil gauge showed yellow (add oil) although I had a full reservoir. Also after running at a crawl through a no wake zone on the way home the overheat buzzer came on. I shut off and started after the buzzer stopped and it happened 3 more times on the 2 mile trip to dock. I had no alarms at high speed. I have removed the oil tank to check out the sensor which I think is bad. I am hoping that both problems are related to the oil sensor. I was told that the oil pump shuts down after running with the yellow oil light on which in turn would overheat the engine. I can't figure it out, please help.

  1. Yes your thought is correct! Now you can spend a bunch to trace it down or try replacing the sensor orrr the best bet is to remove the oil sending unit and mix your oil in the gas at 50:1.

This way you know for sure that you are getting oil to the engine.

Mixing your oil now and running with the oil tank wont hurt the engine (it may help it since it may have ran hot) it will smoke like h**l and you may have to replace your plugs or clean them....BUT its cheaper than a new motor if you should run it and the oil pump quits!!

  2. AQUAHOLIC, am I correct in saying the oil pump stops sending oil to the engine once the gauge show the yellow alert on tach? Maybe a new sensor will take care of my oil alert and my overheat.

  3. Get assistance. Make phone calls to boat technicians
