Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo shocked over father’s criticism for Marco Simoncelli – MotoGP news
Yamaha Factory Racing rider Jorge Lorenzo was shocked after a statement given by his father, Chicho Lorenzo for the late MotoGP rider, Marco Simoncelli.
The young Italian was just about to be buried after his death at Malaysian GP on last Sunday. The senior Lorenzo said, “Simoncelli wasn’t mentally prepared to race. To race at these levels you also have to train mentally. And he crashed in a similar manner
several times before.”
Shortly after the statement was aired, Lorenzo was ashamed to hear those words. The Spanish rider made a professional and friendly attendance at the funeral of Simoncelli.
He companied Simoncelli’s family and friends, even though they were one of the biggest on track rivals. The Spanish rider deeply mourned his death and loss from the MotoGP family.
Lorenzo left his final words in the memorial book as he will miss him forever and that he is sorry about all the hard talk they had.
He was ashamed to learn that his father had commented in such a harsh way, whereas he was still having a hard time accept Simoncelli’s death.
Lorenzo stated on Twitter, “I’d like to thank the fans for the reception they gave me which makes me even more ashamed of my father’s comments which are out of line. I hope nobody thinks that I agree with what he says, because this could unfortunately have
happened to any of us.”
The Spanish rider and Super Sic had many unpleasant encounters in race. The most bitterly remembered by Lorenzo was from 2010 season when Simoncelli made a hard pass over him.
In the ongoing season at Assen, Simoncelli slipped ahead of Lorenzo, both ending in gravel. Though both restarted the race but it reignited the exchange of harsh words between the rivals.
Another unforgettable incident was when Simoncelli overtook Dani Pedrosa of Repsol Honda and crashed him during the Le Mans event.
Pedrosa was left with a fractured right collarbone which sidelined him for about three races. This also caused a big number of MotoGP fans to criticise Super Sic. Following Pedrosa’s suffering, he was also heavily criticised by race directions, fellow riders
and the paddock.
