Yamaha uncomfortable with tyres in Laguna Seca despite impressive performance – MotoGP news
The end of free practice session 2 in Laguna Seca was satisfactory for Yamaha Factory Racing but they faced some problems with the selection of tyres.
Jorge Lorenzo was able to record his fastest lap at 1 minute and 21.422 seconds in the second practice session of the US Grand Prix. While Ben Spies was able to finish his lap no later than 1 minute and 21.708 seconds in the same session.
Lorenzo and Spies were able to gain early speeds during the race but they were not comfortable with the selection of their tyres.
The Spaniard said that they tried hard rear tyre but it did not proved to be a good selection, therefore they had to try the soft compound tyre.
He added that they tried different setting during the last ten minutes of the practice session but it did not give any improved results, thus resulting in wastage of time.
Lorenzo says, “This afternoon we tried the hard rear tyre but it didn’t work as well as the soft one this morning. We have to try the soft again tomorrow to improve the setting for the hard so we can decide which tyre to use for the race.”
On the other hand, Lorenzo’s teammate, Spies has appreciated the practice session at Laguna Seca. He said that his bike gave impressive performances with old tyres, however, he added that his bike needs some fine tuning but he is expecting good performances
in the race on Sunday.
Spies said, “We did a lot of laps on the old tyres and the bike was pretty quick so I’m happy with that. The bike’s got a good balance, we just need to fine-tune it to get a few more tenths out of it but I think for race pace we’re looking good.”
It would be interesting to see the performance of Yamaha during the US Grand Prix because Spies has recently announced that he will not be signing the contract for the upcoming season 2013 with Yamaha. He also said that his performance at Yamaha will not
be affected by his decision.
