Yang Lan named Special Olympics Ambassador
The Special Olympics organisers have announced that Ms. Yang Lang has been appointed as the Special Olympics Ambassador.
Lan is an important and popular figure in the Chinese media. She is a talk show host as well as the chairperson of the Sun Culture Foundation.
The appointment was announced at the Haidian Special School that is located in the city of Beijing. Yang made the following statements to express herself after having received the honour: "As a Global Ambassador for Special Olympics I will focus on two things.
The first is to bring more support and encouragement to the millions of families in China and around the world who have family members with intellectual disabilities. The second is to promote a culture of diversity and inclusion in our society so people with
disabilities will be more active and visible in Chinese society and around the world. This benefits and strengthens entire communities, not only those with intellectual disabilities.”
The chairman and CEO of the Special Olympics, Dr. Timothy P. Shriver, also congratulated Yang upon her appointment.
During the appointment, Yang made the announcement of a partnership between the Special Olympics and her Sun Culture Foundation that will work with students from Chinese universities. The aim of the partnership is to train these young Chinese for volunteer
work during the Special Olympics in the communities that they belong too. In all, a total of 100 volunteers will take part in the program to give 50 hours in return for a RMB 2000 scholarship. The project will start from Beijing in its initial days and then
spread out to other cities of China.
The Special Olympics was founded in the year 1968 and has been increasingly in popularity ever since. By giving special people the opportunity to take part in sports at an international level, the Special Olympics has given meaning to many lives and given
hope where it was required.
The first time that Yang became associated with the Special Olympics was in 2006 when the Games visited Shanghai in the summer. It was the 12th Special Olympics event that was being held at the time.
