Yani Tseng fails to defend her title at Wegmans LPGA Championship 2012
The current world number one Yani Tseng, who sought to defend her title at the Wegmans LPGA Championship 2012, displayed a woeful performance to finish tied for the 59th
position.
Tseng was the hot favourite for the prestigious title, as most of the analysts had predicted that the superstar would clinch a landslide victory this year too.
However, Tseng could not do her best and let the underdogs surge past her. The field not only featured top-ranked LPGA contenders like Suzann Pettersen, Paula Creamer and Stacy Lewis, but also a number of lesser-known players.
Tseng kicked off the tournament with plenty of confidence, but soon discovered that wining the 2012 edition was not as easy as she had though before setting her foot in the Locust Hill Country Club.
The world number one let down her fans when she got off to a grim start and posted an unimpressive 76 in the opening round. The last round went just as bad, as the Taiwanese star faced trouble making balanced strokes.
She tried to bounce back in the final round, as she managed to shoot a birdie on the very first and the 3rd hole. She, however, looked devastated on the rest of the holes.
Tseng’s hope started to fade when she recorded a double bogey on the difficult par-3 7th and a bogey on the 8th hole.
On the back nine, the top-ranked prodigy remained under pressure, as she made four bogeys and a birdie.
Analysts said that Tseng’s performance was worse than expected, as she knew the course well. They said that most of the big names could not impress their fans, which gave lesser-known players enough room to do their best.
Chinese Shanshan Feng displayed a stunning performance and won her first major title. She posted a decent 67 in the final round.
Speaking about how she felt after hoisting the major trophy, Feng said that she could not believe that she was able to beat battle-hardened contenders.
The young star has been seeking to perform well in a major event, but had never been able to make the cut. Analysts said that her first major title will help her improve her game.
“I know, it's just amazing that I did it just one time. Because I think before this one my best finish in major was only 22nd,” Feng said.
