Yani Tseng finishes outside top 10 in ShopRite LPGA Classic
The current world number one Yani Tseng, who has won three LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) victories in the current season, could not prove her mettle at the ShopRite LPGA Classic 2012, as she finished
outside the top 10.
The prestigious tournament, played at Seaview Resort Course, Galloway New Jersey, saw Tseng get off to a decent star, as she posted a 71 in the opening round.
The top-ranked star was standing tied for 24th at the end of the first round, but picked pace in the second round, jumping to 7th after she scored an impressive 67.
Tseng was considered the hot favourite for the coveted title, as she has maintained her upper hand in women’s golf for the past several months.
Analysts said that the Taiwanese golfer could not live up to the expectations of her fans and the spectators, but she seemed satisfied with her performance.
Other prominent contenders in the roster included American Stacy Lewis, who won the event after posting an overall 201, Ai Miyazato, world number three Suzann Pettersen, Paula Creamer, Lexi Thompson, Amy Yang,
Karrie Webb, Katherine Hull, Sophie Gustafson and Laura Davies of England.
Tseng’s worse-than-expected performance in the last two rounds put a dent in her overall leaderboard position, and she tumbled to 12th along with five other contenders.
Golf commentators said that most of the big names could not prove their worth at the event, and lesser-known contenders capitalised on this situation.
Speaking to the media at the end of the second round, Tseng said that she got off to a good start, but faltered in the later stages.
“I make more putts today. Yesterday I didn't make any, but I still played a really good solid round yesterday, but finished even,” the world number one star said.
“But today I hit the shots better also and I just make lots of putts, and I had one three-putt like hitting the second shot in from 50 yards, so that was kind of a disappointing hole for me”.
Praising the winner, Stacy, Tseng said that she knew the American star would display a good performance. “She must be playing a different golf course. A six-shot lead, that's a lot, and she even make double
today. She's a very, very good player”.
