Yani Tseng grabs her fourth major by winning Wegmans LPGA Championship
Taiwanese ace Yani Tseng smashed a score of six-under par 66 in the final round of Wegmans LPGA Championship, which was staged at the par-72 Locust Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York to lift the trophy. The 22-year-old became the youngest player in
the history of golf to win four majors titles with this victory.
Tseng teed-off from the front and reeled six birdies against a single bogey to surge into a lead of ten strokes. The winner of Kraft Nabisco, Women's British Open and 2008 LPGA Championship, dropped her pace at the back, where she could only pick two birdies.
Despite the slow closing, the player sealed Sunday with a 10-stroke lead to have her name registered in record books.
"I don't think about being the youngest," said Tseng, while commenting on the new record set by her. "I just focus on the shots and the tournament. I just told myself, 'It's only the first hole. It is better than a bogey on 10 or 18. I just told myself to
be patient and try to get it back."
Commenting on the support from the crowd, who filled the course with the sound of their applause, Tseng said, “I had very good emotions. I felt so many people supporting me. I really feel appreciated.”
Ten stokes shy of the winner sat American pro Morgan Pressel, who posted a score of 1-under, 71 in the final round. A three-way tie was seen at the third spot on the leaderboard, which included Norwegian Suzann Pettersen, American Paula Creamer and Cristie
Kerr. The trio posted a score of 8-under-par to bank on $132,512 worth of prize money.
Being a major winner, Tseng will be heading next for the Grand Slam at the Broadmoor course in Colorado. The Taiwanese prodigy will be taking a few tips on the course from her role model, Annika Sorenstam, who won her first major on the same course.
The tips will come in handy for Tseng, and judging by the way she performed at the Wegmans LPGA Championship, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see her clinch yet another title.
