Yani Tseng grabs lead in the second round of Kraft Nabisco Championship
The current world number one Yani Tseng fired a 68 in the 2nd round of the Kraft Nabisco Championship, grabbing a one-shot lead over Haeji Kang.
Tseng consolidated her position on the leaderboard by recording 5 birdies, however, she faltered on two holes, scoring bogeys.
The Taiwanese star appeared to be in a stellar form, as she not only battled her tough rivals, but also the strong winds sweeping the Mission Hills Country Club.
She played comfortable strokes on most of the holes in the 2nd round.
Tseng kicked off the $2 million tournament in an amazing style, taking full advantage of the favourable conditions on the course.
The world number one managed to pile up a big score on the first day. Her scoring 68 in the first round helped her grab the third spot.
Round one saw Tseng launch 6 birdies. She seemed to be at ease with her putts, as she surged ahead with calculated moves.
Round two was the scene of tough rivalry between the first-round leader Lindsey Wright and other top-ranked players. Wright carded a stunning a 67 in the first round and jumped atop the leaderboard.
Wright, however, lost her momentum in the second round, giving Tseng and Haeji Kang enough room to surge ahead.
The Aussie Wright scored 71 and settled for the third spot at the end of the second round.
Analysts had predicted well before the championship that Tseng would try to make up for last year’s defeat in the same tournament. The last edition of the major championship was won by Stacy Lewis.
Tseng displayed a consistent game throughout the two rounds, as she drained her first birdie on the par-5 end hole.
Although she started the round with a bogey on the first hole, she offset the impact by shooting 5 birdies in the round.
Speaking to the media at the end of the day, Tseng said that she was glad that she maintained her magic form in the second round as well.
She said that the next rounds will be tougher than the first two, but she is determined to stay focused. “You never get tired when you want to win a tournament,” Tseng said.
