Yani Tseng grabs victory at Phoenix
The current world number one Yani Tseng stunned her fans at the RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup, grabbing an impressive victory.
Tseng played terrifically in the final round and kept her rivals at bay through most of the day. This was her 2nd LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) triumph of the 2012 season.
The field of the RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup held at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge’s Wildfire Golf Club, Phoenix, featured a competent field.
The field comprised leading LPGA stars, such as Paula Creamer and Karrie Webb, who was defending her title.
Tseng showed her usual form on the last day, as she did what her fans had expected her to do. She played almost all the holes with precision, avoiding making poor putts.
The weather conditions at Phoenix were a bit fierce early in the day, as strong winds whipped through the course, making it difficult for players to keep focus on the ball.
The world number one player scored an impressive 4-under 68, beating Na Yeon Choi and Ai Miyazato of Japan.
Tseng said that she found it a little challenging to keep the pressure on her rivals. She said that snatching a victory in the difficult situation really lifted her hopes to maintain her number one position in the world rankings.
Due to bad light at the Wildfire Golf Club, the match had to be suspended for a few hours, making most of the players nervous.
Tseng made the most of her putting expertise, shooting a 2-foot putt to cap off the event in an impressive style.
The match had dragged on for hours, as players had to tee off after sunset to finish the remaining holes.
Tseng described the situation in the final moments as uncertain, saying she had no idea what was going to happen to their remaining holes due to bad light.
“It was a little drama out there,” she said. “I was feeling like we were going to finish tomorrow, so we were really lucky to finish today and finish in the dark the last few holes”.
She added, “Because of my eyes, I couldn’t see much of a distance, so I tried to keep to myself, ‘OK, just finish these few holes, just hit a good shot, good contact, play one shot at a time’”.
