Yani Tseng manages to rise up in the logjam at Suzhou Taihu Ladies Open on LET
World number one Yani Tseng has shot into contention in the opening round of the Suzhou Taihu Ladies Open, her debut here at the scenic Suzhou Taihu International Golf Club, an hour from Shanghai. Pulling in a strong four-under, 68 in windy and cold conditions,
the Chinese-Taipei player is now sharing the lead with the defending champion Lee-Anne Pace of South Africa, Denmark’s Lisa Holm Sorensen and Scotland’s Kylie Walker.
“I played pretty consistently today. It’s always good to be bogey-free, but I missed two four-footer putts otherwise it could be better, but it’s the first day of the tournament: I still have two days to go and I’m very happy with what I finished today.”
Tseng was later talking to the reporters.
Tseng is looking for 11th title for the year and she has already been awarded with the Player of the Year accolade for a second consecutive year on LPGA. She also won the LPGA Taiwan event a fortnight ago and is hoping to gate crash into the Hall
of Fame with her baffling performance. Tseng is just 22-years-old and has to wait for another six years to actually make it into the Hall of Fame.
For Pace, however, this turf holds special prominence as she won her fifth Ladies European Tour (LET) title here a year ago and has been winless since then. She started off with birdies at the opening two holes and made the turn with one more at the ninth.
She dropped just one shot in her 18-hole stretch. The young South African was also the Henderson Money leader in 2010. She fought a tight pitched battle in a four-way Playoff last year alongside Christel Boeljon, Julieta Granada and Hannah Jun, to win the
title.
Denmark’s Sorensen is hoping to post a strong performance if not a win here in Suzhou to help her secure her tour card for the next year.
“My game has been quite good today. I played pretty much flawless: hit many greens and gave myself a lot of opportunities out there and took the good ones, so all in all, I’m very happy with my game.” said Sorensen.
She dropped one shot in her opening round and carded five birdies in all.
