Yani Tseng off to a slow start at US Women’s Open 2012
Current world number one Yani Tseng, who is seeking to grab a Grand Slam title by recording a victory at the US Women’s Open 2012, got off to a slow start in the first round, as she posted a 74 to tie for the 38th position on the leaderboard.
Tseng is regarded as the strongest and most perfect player in the field of the current edition of the US Open, being played at Kohler, but she could not live up the expectations of golf-crazy fans.
The top-ranked prodigy, who has stood firm at the number one spot in the Women’s World Golf Rankings for many weeks now, has performed below average in the last two matches.
Displaying a worse-than-expected performance has appeared to have disappointed her fans, and now the star golfer is under intense scrutiny.
Analysts said that the Taiwanese star will have to play the next rounds with a more effective strategy, or she will likely lose control of the match.
With lesser-known players having surged to top spots, it has become very crucial for the feared golfer to remain in contention.
Lizette Salas from America was the main attraction on Thursday, as she fired a 69 to share a lead with two other contenders.
Salas, despite the formidable roster, did not seem to be under pressure at all and made stunning shots on almost every hole.
Golf commentators said that Tseng’s number one position is not in jeopardy because her overall points are good enough to keep her in a strong position.
Tseng, while speaking to the media at the end of the round, said that she is happy with her performance on the opening day, and hopes to continue to play well in the next rounds.
She said that what she did on Thursday was the best she could do, as she avoided making poor shots throughout the day.
“You know, I played my best today.  I only had two bad holes.  I had one 6 and one 7.  But I hung in there and didn't give up any shots and I fight to the end and make up a couple birdies on the back.  And 2‑over is not far back, and there is lots of golf
we will play for the next three days,” the world number one said.
