Yani Tseng off to a woeful start at LPGA Championship 2012
Yani Tseng, who is seeking to defend her title at the Wegmans LPGA Championship, got off to a woeful start in the opening round, as she posted a 76 to stand tied for the 80th spot on the leaderboard.
Tseng is the hot favourite player for the coveted title. The tournament, being played at the Locust Hill Country Club, New York, is featuring most of the top-ranked LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) contenders.
The Taiwanese star kicked off the round in an unimpressive style, as she recorded a bogey on the very first hole. After parring the second hole, she made a birdie on par-4 3rd.
On the back nine, the top-ranked golfer displayed the same performance, as she shot 3 bogeys and just one birdie.
Tseng has been playing well in the current season, as she has racked up 3 LPGA titles so far. Analysts said that Tseng has what it takes to beat rivals, and she can bounce back in the upcoming rounds.
They said that the world number one might have been troubled about adjusting to the new conditions at New York, as the course features a number of tricky holes.
Last year, Tseng displayed a good performance on the same course, as she won the major title by ten strokes. Moreover, the victory made her the youngest female player to win four major events.
Speaking to the media before starting her match on Friday, the Taiwanese prodigy said that she is confident to make a good start, as the tournament is very special for her.
Recounting her victory in the last edition, she said that she usually plays big tournaments like a normal event, and this is what has helped her grab 4 major titles.
Tseng said that she is thrilled about playing at Locust Hill Country Club once again, and she will try to keep her honour intact by defending the title.
“I mean, it's always very happy to be back here. And I have the really wonderful memory of last year. The play on Sunday, it's pretty fun on the back 9 because I know I had a big shot lead, and I just enjoy and smile all the way. And the crowd here was amazing,”
she said.
