Yani Tseng racks up Athlete of the Month Award
Yani Tseng, who was recently picked as the 2011 Player of the Year, has received yet another accolade as the US Sports Academy has nominated her for the Athlete of the Month Award.
The current world number one Tseng has been outstanding throughout the 2012 season, with three victories on the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) Tour.
The Taiwanese star proved her mettle in the Honda LPGA Thailand, Kia Classic and RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup, winning titles.
Keeping in view Tseng’s magic performance in the recent events, the US Sports Academy decided to nominate her for the coveted award.
The Academy is one of most prominent graduate sport schools in the world and has been around for a long time.
Tseng, who has stayed atop the Women’s World Golf Rankings for the past 61 weeks, started the current season in an impressive style.
The Honda LPGA Thailand, which is known for featuring a strong field, brought plenty of surprises to Tseng’s fans. The top-ranked star capitalised on the support given by the Asian crowd, as she clinched the title.
Tseng stunned the golf world yet again when she won back-to-back LPGA events. She grabbed titles at the RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup on 18 March and the Kia Classic on 25 March.
Analysts said that winning the Kia Classic was the most spectacular feat, as she recorded a stellar 6-stroke victory.
The officials of the United States Sports Academy said that they did not have to think too much while selecting Athlete of the Month, as the Taiwanese prodigy topped the list of the best players.
They said that recording two straight triumphs in the current season helped Tseng grab the limelight, as the rest of the LPGA players were not able to record such an impressive performance.
"The victories increased Tseng's lead in the world rankings over No. 2 Na Yeon Choi by a bigger margin than the gap between Choi and the final name (No. 766) on the rankings," the US Sports Academy officials said.
Last month, the Golf Writers Association of America awarded Tseng the 2011 Player of the Year, in recognition of her amazing performance in the 2012 season.
"The award, for all golfers, is recognition and encouragement. I really appreciate everyone that voted for me," Tseng said.
