Yani Tseng says being number one is tough
Yani Tseng has said that she may have been enjoying her number one position in world rankings for several months, but the price to be on top is much heavier than most players think.
Speaking to the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) during her pre-tournament interview at Taoyuan, Taiwan, where she is set to take part in the Sunrise LPGA Taiwan Championship 2012, Tseng said that she has been lucky to reach the top position in the Women’s World Golf Rankings, but the success did not come without troubles.
Tseng came under a barrage of criticism a few weeks back as her performance has been worse than average in the current season. She has finished most of the recent LPGA tournaments miserably, even missing the cut and struggling outside top 50.
Tseng has repeatedly shown that she does not hate it when her critics dredge up how bad she has been performing despite being the number one golfer, as she thinks winning and losing is part of the sport and it will take her a couple of good finishes to get back in motion  once again.
When asked what it has been like to stay at the number one position, the Taiwanese star said that she had always wanted to be on the top before she rose to fame.
But she said she had never realised how tough it would be to cope with all the pressure and attention.
“I asked Annika a few things before I became No. 1, the year before I did. She told me that world No. 1 is the loneliest place on the earth,” said Tseng who is a big fan of former world number one Annika Sorenstam of Sweden.
She went on to say that fans’ pressure has been enormous as they expect her to win all the time, no matter how low she may feel.
“At the time I couldn’t feel anything, I was like no, I’m happy. I feel I’m happy as a person. I have so many friends, support from media, fans and my team. Everybody is happy and I don’t feel anything. As it become longer at No. 1, I feel more and more pressure and everybody is trying to grab every piece of me,” she added.
