Yani Tseng stands strong after she grabs first-round lead at CN Canadian Women's Open 2012
Current world number one Yani Tseng displayed a stellar performance in the first round of the CN Canadian Women’s Open 2012 as she shot a 66 in the opening round to grab an early lead.
Tseng, who performed well at the Safeway Classic 2012 held last week, looked quite confident when she came face-to-face against battle-hardened rivals at the Vancouver Golf Club, Canada.
Starting her round on the 10th hole, Tseng made perfect putts on most of the holes she played. She impressed the Canadian spectators when she drained two straight birdies on the 11th and
12th hole. She then parred the next five holes and carded another birdie on the par-4 18th hole.
When Tseng started her front nine, she looked as confident as she was at the start of the prestigious tournament. The first hole proved a little tricky for the top-ranked prodigy as she could not handle the
ball and ended up carding a double bogey.
After parring the second and the difficult third hole, Tseng swung into action once again and reeled off three consecutive birdies on the fourth, fifth and sixth hole. She launched another two back-to-back
birdies on the eighth and ninth hole, further strengthening her position on the leaderboard.
South Korean Na Yeon Choi also grabbed attention on the course as she fired an overall 67 to take the second position on the leaderboard.
Analysts said that Tseng has finally ended her grim phase that recently saw her perform worse than most of the lower-ranked players. She missed the cut in some of the recent events.
Speaking to the media about her sensible start in Canadian Women’s Open, the LPGA giant said that she is more than thrilled after posting a good score in the opening round.
She said that her performance was not the only factor that helped her rise to top of the leaderboard, Canadian spectators were also very supportive as they gave her a much-needed mental boost.
“I feel so good and so happy. Today out there with so many fans following this group, I'm so excited to have their support,” Tseng shared.
“They always give me a big crowd on every shot. I hit so many good shots today, but I didn't drive that well on the front nine. So I saved like three or four shots out of like 15 feet for par, so that was
huge for me”.
