Yanina Wickmayer: a flash back of her performances this year
 
Born on 20th October 1989 in the city of Lier, Yanina Wickmayer is a professional tennis player from Belgium. The twenty year old Yanina is currently ranked number seventeen in the world by WTA. She came to the limelight after her semi final run at the United States Open tennis tournament back in 2009.
As far as her performances this year are concerned, the Belgian first competed at the ASB Classic tennis tournament as a third seeded player. Yanina knocked down her first seeded opponent Flavia Pennetta in the final battle, capturing the title without missing a single set. The title came as her very first one of the season and third overall.
At the Australian Open tennis tournament, the right handed Yanina got the better of Alexandra Dulgheru in the first round of the competition. She defeated Flavia Pennetta as well as Sara Errani in her second and third round clashes respectively. The Belgian however was ousted in the fourth round of the first major event of the season by Justine Henin in a total of three sets. Despite losing, she jumped to a career high ranking of number fifteen in the world.
In her next two championships, namely the Open GDF Suez tennis tournament which was held in Paris as well as the 2010 Dubai Tennis competition, Yanina was dismissed in the opening matches by Petra Martic in Paris and Shahar Pe'er in Dubai.
The Diest resident, played a little better in the BNP Paribas Open tennis competition where she triumphed in a total of two matches before falling down in the next round match to Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez from Spain, who had beaten Victoria Azarenka, a sixth seeded player in her previous clash.
Wickmayer, who was seeded twelfth, then reached Miami to contest at the Sony Ericsson Open competition to win the title. The Belgian tennis sensation did well to make her way into the quarterfinal round of the tournament where she was kicked out by Marion Bartoli after a close two setter clash. As a result of her quarter run, Yanina Wickmayer further improved her world ranking to number thirteen by the WTA.
At the clay court French Open tennis tournament, the 1.83 meters tall, Yanina toppled Sandra Zahlavova in the first round in a two setter clash. The final match score was 6–1, 6–1. She defeated Sybille Bammer in a total of three sets in her second round match before falling down to Daniela Hantuchova in a total of two sets.
Yanina, at the grass court Grand Slam tournament this season, hammered down Riske in a tight first round clash at the All England Club. She made her way into the third round of the competition after getting the better of Kirsten Flipkens, however lost to Vera Zvonareva in the next round in straight sets.
At the 2010 Western and Southern Financial Group Masters and Women's Open tennis tournament, Wickmayer was downed by the top seeded Australian Samantha Stosur in the quarterfinal match.
The Belgian was seeded number eight at the 2010 Mercury Insurance Open tennis championship, however she was kicked out by Svetlana Kuznetsova in her opening round match in straight sets.
At the W&S Financial Group Women's Open tennis contest this season, Wickmayer was seeded number twelve to win the title. In the first round, she toppled Greta Arn in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-2, 6-2. The Belgian reached the quarterfinal round of the competition where she was defeated by Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in a three setter clash. The final match score was 7-5, 3-6, 6-1.
