Yanina Wickmayer defeats Ayumi Morita; sails into the third round – French Open 2011
21st seed Yanina Wickmayer crushed Japanese tennis-pro Ayumi Morita 6-4, 7-5 on Thursday to reach the third round of 2011 French Open here in Paris. Although Morita committed a minimal of unforced errors in the match she had very few answers against some high quality clay court tennis displayed by the Belgian.
Looking to upset the seeded player, Morita looked to attack right from the start of the contest. She served with accuracy and control and certainly created problems for the world number 22 player.
Both players traded serve breaks in a tight first set as some highly competitive tennis was witnessed. However, Wickmayer was able to take control of the match with her third serve break in tenth game of the set as she took the set score lead 1-0.
The second set also followed a similar pattern with both players struggling to hold on to their service games. Wickmayer smashed lovely forehand and backhand winner all over the court and made her opponent run for her money. Breaking the serve twice, she earned an impassable lead in the set and although Morita broke back in one of the game, she was unable to stop Wickmayer from earning a well deserved victory.
With her solid all around performance, the Belgian dominated almost all departments of the game. She claimed 69 percent of the points on her first serve and also managed to take 48 percent of the points on the receiving end. Making the most of her chances in the match, Wickmayer converted five out of eleven break points during the match. Sending 41 winners to her opponent’s half of the court, the Belgian dashed cracking shots to bamboozle Morita.
Morita put up a brave effort and fought right till the last minute. She played a very controlled game play but unfortunately she was no match to her opponent. Ranked 47th in the world, Morita was disappointed with the result and hopes to make a strong comeback on her next Women’s Tennis Association appearance.
Being in terrific form since the start of this season, the 21-year-old Wickmayer will be feeling very confident after securing convincing victories in her opening two matches here in Paris. She started the year with final appearance at Auckland. Since then she has produced a number of considerable performances on the tour including her semi-final run at the 2011 BNP Paribas Open.
However, she must try and overcome the discrepancies in her game play if she wants to continue her run at Roland Garros as other top seeded player may not let her get away with her unforced errors. In her next match-up, she will face Agnieszka Radwanska, who crushed the Indian hope Sania Mirza 6-2, 6-4.
