Yanina Wickmayer ousts Vania King to book a spot in round two – Family Circle Cup 2012
World number 30, Yanina Wickmayer, ousted the 53rd ranked American, Vania King, to reach the second round of the Family Circle Cup on Tuesday. She clinched the victory in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 taking just an hour and
21 minutes.
Both players were squaring off for the first time in the professional careers and it was obvious that Wickmayer with a lot of experience under her belt will rule the show and dominate the American throughout. It was exactly what
happened at the clay court of Charleston; as soon as King looked to take hold of her game, Wickmayer came up with such an intelligent shot that the American was left wondering.
The 12th seed Belgian looks pretty solid this season and probably eyes to break into the Top-20 players of the world for the second time in her career. She commenced the match with a serve hold and soon after adjusting
to the game style of her opponent; broke serve in the fifth game to take the lead.
However, a slight cameo from the American levelled the scores at 4-4 courtesy to a well constructed breakpoint. Despite showing a lot of promise, King failed to absorb pressure in the final serve game and dropped a breakpoint that
proved suicidal in the end.
The second set was not much different from the first. Both players registered serve holds to build up some momentum into the play. It was the Belgian who improvised a bit in the sixth game and won a breakpoint to take the lead
of 4-2.
She was smart to lower the tempo of the play and frustrated her opponent with cutters and drop shots. King was made to work hard for her points that drained her stamina completely. The Belgian kept the lead intact until the end.
She was on the verge of losing the advantage on six different occasions but saved all breakpoints to sustain her lead.
King goes out of the tournament on her home soil whilst the visitor from Belgium will take on the Kazakh qualifier, Yaroslava Shvedova, in the second round of the contest.
