Yanina Wickmayer overwhelms Yvonne Meusburger to reach the semis – NURNBERGER Gastein Ladies 2012
Earning a second seeded wildcard entry to the NURNBERGER Gastein Ladies, Belgium’s Yanina Wickmayer has powered her way to the semi-finals of the tournament with commanding ease. The world number 37 overpowered the local veteran, Yvonne Meusburger, in the quarter-final clash on Friday, dumping her in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, to reach the round of four.
Wickmayer was facing the 138th ranked Meusburger for the first time in her career and had no difficulties in dumping the home favourite in a couple of sets. She adopted her usual aggressive approach right from the beginning and kept thrashing the Austrian opponent throughout the matchup to come out as the dominant winner.
"I was very happy about my match today," Wickmayer said after registering her 21st singles victory of the running season. "I played very well and did what I had to do. I'm very excited about the semis and I'll try to prepare well."
With a first serve precision of 69 per cent in the match, the Belgian clinched 24 out of 35 points on it and broke her opponent’s serve five out of 12 times en route to victory. Meusburger, on the other hand, could come up with just two breaks of serves and coughed a number of unforced errors to finish on the losing side in the end. Wickmayer was also superior to her opponent in terms of the return game, as she won 23 out of 42 return points on the Austrian’s serve to get her hands on victory.
22-year-old Wickmayer came to Bad Gastein, Austria, as one of the hot favourites for winning the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International Tour event and her run in the tournament so far has impressed everyone. The Belgian tennis ace is looking for her maiden championship title this season and an emphatic victory in Bad Gastein might be extremely vital for her Wimbledon Campaign.
Up next for Wickmayer is the Luxembourgian tennis sensation, Mandy Minella, in the round of four at NURNBERGER Gastein Ladies. Minella stunned the eighth seeded Swede opponent, Johanna Larsson, in the quarter-finals, settling the three-setter at 1-6, 6-2, 6-2, to book a date with the second seeded Belgian.
