Yanina Wickmayer thrashes Bojana Jovanovski in the 1st round – Western & Southern Open 2011
Contesting on hard courts of the Lindner Family Tennis Center were Belarusian Yanina Wickmayer and Serbian Bojana Jovanovski. World number 21 Wickmayer got rid of Jovanovski in a 6-3, 6-4 victory during the first round of the Western
and Southern Open 2011.
The two had previously met during the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, Dubai, Emirates, earlier this year. Wickmayer had triumphed over her opponent with 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 victory. This was the second time they were contesting
but it was unlikely to see an upset against Wickmayer.
The world number 21, opened the set by smashing two aces, however, she later committed 3 double faults, losing the competitive edge. However, Jovanovski had committed 2 fewer double faults and smashed four aces to win a game.
Struggling with her confidence the Serbian was hardly able to save any break points on her serve and because she was able to falter her opponent’s defence, she was able to break her opponent once. Wickmayer utilized her forearm
as a deadly weapon that won her 80% of her first serve points, against the Serb, who only mustered a mediocre serve during the first, winning 50% of her total service points.
With a consistently poor performance in both her first and second return, the Serb had a pitiable 32% win in her total return points, whereas, the Belarusian with her skilful backhand not only placed drop shots in her return serve
but made her opponent run around the court like a ping pong ball and won 14 out of 28 points, making it an exceptional 50% win in her total return points and triumphed the set.
Both the players had turned a notch higher in their serves, with Wickmayer winning an exceptional 67% in her total service points and Jovanovski attaining 59%.
However there was not much difference in their return serves and instead they both had displayed an appalling performance in their respective returns.
For the Belarusian playing against world number 55 (Jovanovski) was as easy as pie and it seemed it was a one way travel.
With her strong backswing the 21 year-old was able to achieve a 41% win in her total return points and put her opponent to shame as she was only able to bag a pitiable 33% of the total return points.
This time the Serb had struck four double faults and it seemed as if she thought her opponent was not Wickmayer but the net! Whilst, her opponent had committed only one line fault and managed to hit 2 aces and with another ace
she was able to seal the set to a comprehensive victory of 6-4.
