Yanina Wickmayer triumphs over Varvara Lepchenko in first round – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Nineteenth seed, Yanina Wickmayer from Belgium displayed solid tennis to down America’s Varvara Lepchenko in straight sets at Wimbledon Championships 2011, third of the fourth Grand Slam event held in London, England. She registered
a 7-5, 6-3 victory over the 25-year-old American to advance into the second round on Monday.
World number nineteen, Wickmayer displayed her true colours at SW19 where she trashed American, ranked sixty-six places below her in straight sets on their first meeting. After earning this success at All England Lawn Tennis and
Croquet Club, the Belgian took the lead in the head-to-head series by 1-0 against the American.
21-year-old Belgian played a hard fought battle in the opening set as they both succeeded to break each other defences and levelled the scores at 5-5. She then converted second of the fourth breakpoint chance to her advantage to
seal the set by winning seven games to five in fifty-one minutes. Wickmayer clobbered a lower first serve share of 60 percent as compared to Lepchenko’s 77 percent but registered an impressive 72 percent win on it.
The Lier native, Wickmayer raised her level of game in the final set as earned great stats to herself. She produced a much better first serve share of 69 percent as opposed to American’s 50 percent and earned a plausible 72 percent
win on it. In addition to this, the Belgian hit eight winners and committed fewer unforced errors to sugar coat the set.
The Belgian made a terrific start of the season as she made a final round berth at Auckland before falling to Hungarian Greta Arn. Her form took many turns as she was ousted from early rounds in many tournaments and on the other
hand, Wickmayer made quarter-final showings at Paris, Charleston, Brussels and s-Hertogenbosch before entering this Grand Slam event.
Lepchenko, on the other side of net, had a terrible ongoing season as she hasn’t reached a third round of any tournament this year. She carried her disastrous ways into this tournament and after losing her opening round match here,
the American extended her losing streak to three matches.
Up next for the blooming Belgian is the Georgian Anna Tatishvili who made an epic comeback from trailing a set down to win by a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 mouth watering match against Russian Anastasia Pivovarova on another court.
The Georgian saved seven out of ten breakpoints conceded and converted five out of fifteen breakpoint chances to her advantage. Furthermore, she registered an impressive 71 percent win on her slightly higher first serve share and
smacked thirty-three winners to seal the deal in almost two hours.
