Yanina Wickmayer trounces Alison Riske in the first round – Bell Challenge 2012
Second seed, Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium, did not face much trouble in overpowering the world number 150 from USA, Alison Riske, in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 in the opening round of the Challenge Bell. This WTA Tour event is being
held on the carpeted courts of Quebec City in Canada.
Riske drew the first blood, hitting a blow to the Belgian contestant in the opening game to go up 1-0 but she could not consolidate on it, losing the following game to square off the score at 1-1. Wickmayer gained momentum afterwards,
as she broke the American participant in the eighth and held her next serve to triumph 6-3.
None of the two players managed to hit an ace in the second set but Wickmayer committed one double fault and Riske made a couple of them. The Belgian player put in 71 percent of the first serves and secured 12 of the 20 points
on them. The Monte Carlo, Monaco resident fared averagely on the replies to her opponent’s deliveries, as she won seven of the 17 first and five of the nine second return points. Wickmayer could not save the only break point she faced but succeeded in converting
two of the three she received in the opener.
In the second set, the Belgian did the same which her opponent had done with her in the first, as she broke her in the first game to take a 1-0 lead. Wickmayer took advantage of the early strike by holding her following serve and
moving ahead 2-0. The Belgian player maintained her lead till the end of the set, grabbing it 6-3.
Both players failed to hit even a single ace this time and made one double fault. Wickmayer kept her first serve percentage at 61 and pocketed nine of the 14 points on them. The Belgian participant avoided two of the three break
threats she came across and availed all the three chances she created in the second set.
Wickmayer will face Canada’s Stephanie Dubois or American qualifier, Lauren Davis, for making a place for herself in the last eight.
