Yanina Wickmayer trounces Mariana Duque-Marino to enter round two – Nurnberger Gastein Ladies 2012
Second seeded wildcard entrant, Yanina Wickmayer of Belgian, tumbled the Colombian challenger, Marian Duque-Marino, in straight sets at the Nurnberger Gastein Ladies 2012 on Tuesday. She juggled up a 6-3, 6-4 victory against the 22-year-old Colombian to
progress into the second round at this red clay court tournament held in Bad Gastein.
The seeded Belgian required almost one and a half hour-long venture to trash the world number 117 in their second encounter. After earning the limelight, Wickmayer not only took lead in the head-to-head series by 2-0 against the Colombian but also secured
a place in the round of 16 at these Austrian clay courts.
Wickmayer made a strong entry at this WTA International event and drew the first blood in the fourth game to leap to a 4-1 lead. She then swiped her remaining serves without encountering any breakpoint and pulled out the opener with a 6-3 score line. The
Belgian sought six break chances in this set and availed one of them.
Ranked 37th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Wickmayer kept momentum rolling in the following set and after earning the critical break in the opening game, she jumped to a 2-0 lead. Despite losing her edge in the fourth game and exchanging two serve
breaks, the Belgian got the breakthrough in the ninth game before serving out the set with a 6-4 win.
All in all, the Monaco resident manipulated a better first serve share of 67 per cent as opposed to her rival’s 54 per cent and amazingly marked 25 out of 37 points on it. He also coughed fewer unforced errors and clicked five out of 13 break chances to
get the upper hand.
Up next for the Belgian star is the winner of an all-Austrian affair between Patricia Mayr-Achleitner and Nicole Rottmann.
The top seed, Julia Goerges, faced a bitter fate earlier that day. She was crashed out by the Dutch qualifier, Richel Hogenkamp, in gruelling three sets in their first meeting. The top local seed made quick in-roads but stepped off steam afterwards. She
lost her serve four times and eventually suffered a 6-3, 3-6, 3-6 shock.
