Yankees’ Curtis Granderson shines as New York Yankees defeat Baltimore Orioles 11-10 – MLB Update
Curtis Granderson and Robinson Cano took the lead as rookie Jesus Montero cemented it as the New York Yankees romped to a 11-10 win over the Baltimore Orioles in the three-game series starter at Yankee Stadium in New York on Monday, September 5.
Casing 5-2 in the bottom of the second inning, the Yankees’ batting hub combined to give a blow to the league rivals. Derek Jeter and rookie Jesus Montero stole bases before Granderson landed and stroked a line drive for an RBI double. Another batting combination
took place after Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira and Granderson occupied the bases. With all the bases loaded, hard hitting Cano entered the plate and sent a fast ball many rows back for a grand slam. It is his second grand slam of the season.
Orioles fought brilliantly and tied the game at 8-all until the top of the fifth inning. Mark Reynolds hammered a homer in the third while Robert Andino brewed in the fifth inning.
This was followed by a dream inning for Montero, as he blistered his first home-run of his career. A 93-mph pitch came swinging but Montero took a step and sent it dozens of rows back for his first home-run. After two innings, he attacked a 94-mph pitch
on the outside corner and made it 10-rows for his second homer.
"I was dreaming of that before," Montero said. “I was always telling myself before, 'One day, I'm going to be that guy.' "
21-year-old prospect made a brilliant impression even in his fourth big league game. He has .385 batting averages with five runs and three RBIs since he debuted against Boston Red Sox last Thursday.
"You don't get too giddy on one game and you don't get too down on another game," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "You're going to watch him over a period of time."
Orioles again struck back and shortened the losing margin to just one until the end of the ninth inning. Reynolds added three runs on three hits and two RBIs while Andino stroked two runs on two hits and scored two RBIs. J.J. Hardy, Nick Markakis, Vladimir
Guerrero, Matt Wieters and Ryan Adams each scored a single run.
Yankees’ Freddy Garcia gave away seven runs on nine hits on just over two innings, young reliever Scott Proctor allowed a single run over two innings. Aaron Laffey won his second game, tossing less than a full inning scoreless. Luis Ayala, Boone Logan, Cory
Wade and Mariano Rivera provided strong back up at a crucial time to help the Yankees win their 86th game of the season.
Orioles’ starter Brian Matusz allowed five runs on five hits over one inning. Reliever Jim Johnson lost his fifth outing, allowing three runs on four hits including two home-runs.
Next game will be played on September 6 at the same venue under possible cloudy weather.
