Yankees’ Steinbrenner wants a sensible Derek Jeter deal
The free agency circus is not going to conclude for a very long time and as Thanksgiving nears, teams in Major League Baseball will look to do their best in dispersing their concerns with new recruitment strategies and operations forecasting for 2011.
The 30 ball clubs in the National League and the American league have a lot of players to choose from in the free agents’ list. There is a high chance that the majority of ballplayers in the free market will still be looking for new lucrative deals from
top teams when December ends.
One of the most followed stories in Major League Baseball points towards the New York Yankees. If you guess that was because of Cliff Lee, you’re wrong. Derek Jeter is the team’s captain at the moment and after having a hard time in the league, last season,
he’s hoping to land an expensive deal with the New York Yankees. The 36 year old relishes a multimillion dollar deal of many years.
Unfortunately General Manager, Brian Cashmore and Co-owners of the franchise are not budging from their seats on a ‘sensible deal’. It comes as no surprise to see the two parties engage in a dead beat negotiation process that hasn’t made much progress thus
far.
The Yanks have offered the player a three year $45 million dollar contract and it doesn’t look to catch Jeter’s attention. Why would it? Jeter came off a 10 year $189 million deal that saw him sweep in $21 million, last season.
Co owner, Hank Steinbrenner recently said, "As much as we want to keep everybody, we've already made these guys very, very rich, and I don't feel we owe anybody anything monetarily. Some of these players are wealthier than their bosses".
He further said, "Do we want to keep Derek? Of course we do, obviously. Obviously we all want to keep Derek and we all want to keep Mo (Mariano Rivera)". Jeter is not going to get any younger, anytime soon and that goes without saying that the 2010 Gold
Glove winning captain will turn 37 in June.
Hank explained the situation by saying, “Negotiating is always a process. I know he wants to stay. It's going to come down to what's fair for everybody considering all circumstances”.
Concerning the free agents in the Yankees roster, Steinbrenner made a thoughtful remark. He said, “I don't think, in the end, they will be unreasonable”.
