Yankees on the verge of elimination as Detroit Tigers look strong for ALDS Game 4 – MLB Update
The New York Yankees are just one loss away from crashing out of the postseason. In 2006, the Yankees were in a similar position against the Detroit Tigers and failed to recover in the fourth game of the American League Division Series. This time, with A.J.
Burnett scheduled to start, their situation seems drearier.
Yankees are trailing 1-2 in the ALDS with the fourth game scheduled for Tuesday, October 4 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan. After having powered their way to an impressive win in the opener, the Yankees have failed twice, including the cursed second
game. In their past eight post-season campaigns, the result of game two in the ALDS has been the result of the series. Is history repeating itself?
Tigers’ manager Jim Leyland remained modest and said, "Trust me, they're not going to go away. We've put ourselves in a decent position, but we've still got more to accomplish. So this is a long way from being over."
Burnett has not been impressive this year and thus was initially scratched from the rotation. Rescheduling of game one after rain, however, forced manager Joe Girardi to include the pitcher in the rotation. Burnett had a decent 11-11 win-loss record during
the regular season, but his earned-run average of 5.15 did not impressed.
Girardi’s decision to include Burnett for a road game stems from the fact that his previous two starts on the road have been handy for the Yankees. He struck-out 15 batters in 11.1 innings at an ERA of 3.18, winning one game and getting a no-decision in
the other.
"I had good games, bad games during the season," Burnett said. "You can say the same thing about the postseason, but you can't count me out.
Burnett commented that he has been proving people wrong throughout his career and still has the confidence to resurface after a poor season. He stated that there is nothing much to prove in the game but winning the game will benefit his team and the bull-pen.
Rick Porcello will start against Burnett in a bid to eliminate the Yankees from the post-season and secure a Championship Series spot for the Tigers. Porcello faced Burnett at Comerica Park on May 5 this year and came out victorious. Although Porcello has
struggled at home games, his ability to perform under pressure will help the Tigers.
The Yankees will be counting on Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira to overcome the team’s offensive struggles. The duo has gone 1-for-21 in three games and has one more chance to keep the Yankees in contention.
