Yann Marti beats Enrico Fioravante to move into main draw – Todi Challenger 2011
Yann Marti of Switzerland took on Enrico Fioravante, the local lad, in the final qualifier round of the 2011 Internazionali di Tennis dell'Umbria, Italy on Sunday, 11th September. The fixture ended as
Marti stormed down the local lad disappointing the fans and making his way into the main draws in less than an hour.
Playing on clay courts in Todi, Italy, the two unseeded players went head on against each other for the very first time. Ranked at world No.636, Marti, started off in 2007 as a right handed clay court player, however, in the following
year, the 23-year-old started to practice on Indoor hard circuits as well but could not prove as good as he was on clay.
On the contrary, Fioravante, kicked off his career in 2009 also as a clay court player. Although the 21-year-old player belongs to a country of super tennis stars, he could not prove himself as one of them. With a 14-12 win loss
record this year, the Italian world No.739 stuffed his record with another loss against the Swiss in the final qualifier of the Todi Challenger.
Moving on with the match, well the match was just a one way ticket. Serving first to open the set, Marti rolled down the scoreboard with a 1-0 lead in the set and switched the serve. With an early break, the Swiss pulled forward
his lead to 2-0 after game 2. Winning the third consecutive game, Marti finally lost his first game of the match on the Italians serve.
With scores at 3-1, the 23-year-old mastered another set on the clay court winning game 5 and maintaining the 2 games lead, however, the 21-year-old did cut down the lead to 2-4 winning game 6. Marti served next to extended his
lead and broke the final game to muster the set with a 6-2 win and went on for the decider set.
Serving first for the second time, the Swiss magnified his performance winning 5 straight games breaking the Italian in game 2 and 4 to lead 5-0. Fioravante could only bag one game before Marti swirled up high to serving game 7
winning the set 6-1 and the match 6-2, 6-1 and walked on into the main draws of the 2011 Internazionali di Tennis dell'Umbria.
The 23-year-old will now play another home player and qualifier, Antoni Comporto, in his first round match for a seat in the second round of the Todi Challenger.
