Yann Marti beats Guillermo Alcaide to qualify for the main draw - Suisse Open Gstaad 2011
World number 638 Yann Marti of Switzerland upset Spaniard Guillermo Alcaide, ranked 286th in the world, in straight sets 7-6(4), 6-4 in the final round of the qualifying draw at the Credit Agricole Suisse Open in Gstaad,
Switzerland on Sunday. The Swiss took one hour and 30 minutes to undo his opponent in an evenly contest encounter.
Marti and Alcaide exchanged a couple of break of serve in the first set and equalised the score at 6-6 to take the set to a tie-break. The Swiss bagged two mini-breaks in the tie-break and capitalised on them to clinch it 7-4.
The five feet and eight inches tall smacked 49 percent of the first serves and one ace in the first set. The Swiss grabbed thirteen of the twenty first service points and ten of the twenty one second service points in the opening
set. Marti saved one of the two break points he faced and capitalised on two of the three break point opportunities he created on the Spaniard’s serve in the first set.
Marti and his opponent did not lose their serve in the first eight games of the second set, levelling the score at 4-4. Alcaide failed to win his serve in the ninth game and lost the next game as well, losing the set 4-6.
The Swiss had mixed service statistics in the second set. The Innsbruck resident fired four aces and won 80 percent of the first service points but at the same time he committed three double faults and delivered just 43 percent
of the first serves. The right-handed clinched one of the five break points he received on Alcaide’s serve in the second set.
Marti mostly plays future level tournaments. This will be his first tour level event of this season and second of his career. His only previous tour level match was at the same tournament last year. The Swiss upset Marc Gicquel
of France in three sets 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the final qualifier to enter the main draw but did not go past the first round as he lost to compatriot Alexander Sadecky in three sets 5-7, 6-1, 0-6 in the opening match. Marti did not give any notable performance
this year. He reached the semi-finals at a future tournament in Italy, losing to Cristian Rodriguez of Colombia in three sets 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-7(6). Marti was beaten by Italian Marco Simoni 6-3, 4-6, 5-7 at the Milan Challenger last month.
The Swiss will play world number 70 Andreas Haider-Maurer of Austria in the first round of the main draw.
