Yannick Agnel claims Men’s 200m freestyle title – 2012 FINA Swimming World Cup, Berlin
Yannick Agnel of France claimed gold medal of the Men’s 200m freestyle on second day of the 2012 FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup in Berlin, Germany on Sunday, October 21.
The French swimmer showed no mercy to his supporters and dominated the playoff of the 200m discipline. He remained prominently ahead of his opponents from the start and rushed his way towards the finishing end for the crown of the event.
With his astonishing efforts in the eight-lap discipline, Agnel outsmarted the defending champion and world record holder of the event, Paul Biedermann of Germany.
Agnel remained more than half a body length ahead of his toughest challenger and sprinted his way towards the wall for gold medal with a timing of 1 minute and 42.10 seconds.
The champion was followed by Biedermann, who remained 0.61 seconds slower and emerged on the finishing end for silver medal by producing an effort of 1 minute and 42.71 seconds.
Biedermann was traced by Darian Townsend of South Africa, who was only a touch apart and completed the victory stand by securing third place in a time of 1 minute and 42.79 seconds.
Fourth finest spot of the race was obtained by Tommaso D’Orsogna of Australia, who remained 0.30 seconds behind and clocked a time of 1 minute and 43.09 seconds.
The Australian swimmer was traced by Yannick Lebherz, who was nearly four seconds apart and finished his race in fifth best place by posting a time of 1 minute and 47.03 seconds.
Similarly, Lebherz remained only 0.01 seconds ahead of Robin Backhaus, who occupied sixth spot of the race by touching the wall with an effort of 1 minute and 47.04 seconds.
Backhaus was followed by Daniel Skaaning of Denmark, who stayed 1.19 seconds apart and tapped the wall with a timing of 1 minute and 48.23 seconds.
Eighth position of the race was secured by Vinicius Waked of Brazil, who was 0.19 seconds slower and clocked a time of 1 minute and 48.42 seconds.
In addition, Agnel was delighted with his achievement in the 200m event and collected accolade after the race.
