Yannick Agnel earns Men’s 200m freestyle title: Day one – 2012 National Open of Montpellier
Yannick Agnel of France displayed his noteworthy efforts by occupying gold medal of the Men’s 200m freestyle on first day of the 2012 National Open of Montpellier on February 3.
The 19-year-old Agnel, who earned silver medal of the Men’s 50m butterfly discipline earlier at the session, served notice of his talent by upsetting his challengers in the 200m discipline.
The French expert has the honour of representing his country at numerous international competitions. Recently, he obtained silver medal of the Men’s 4*200m freestyle relay at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai.
He also captured a gold medal in the 4*100m freestyle and a bronze in the 4*200m freestyle relay at the 2010 Dubai Short Course World Championships. On top of that, Agnel seized gold medal of the 400m freestyle swim at the 2010 European Long Course Championships in Budapest.
With his immaculate efforts, Agnel managed to take lead over his strongest competitor and team-member, Clement Lefert. He experienced strong resistance from his fellow swimmers but proved his determination for gold medal by reaching the finishing wall first.
Agnel showered his expertise in the four-lap freestyle discipline and accomplished the crown by completing his swim in a time of 1 minute and 46.94 seconds. The gold medallist was followed by the 24-year-old Lefert, who remained just 0.90 seconds slower than him on the finishing wall and occupied second position.
Lefert remained nearly two strokes behind Agnel and hit the finishing blockade with a timing of 1 minute and 47.84 seconds for silver medal. Similarly, the silver medallist faced strong competition from his teammate, Gregory Mallet, but succeeded in overwhelming his effort.
The 27-year-old Mallet was 0.92 seconds slower from overpowering the effort of his foregoing competitor and transpired on the finishing end for third position by clocking a time of 1 minute and 48.76 seconds.
Agnel was delighted with his title claiming effort on the opening day of the championship and expressed his desire of excelling in the 200m discipline at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Furthermore, the spectators appreciated forceful efforts of all swimmers in their respective events while the winners were awarded medals after the session.
