Yannick Agnel wins the Men’s 200m freestyle final - 2011 Canet En Roussillon
Long Course European Junior Championships gold medallist, Yannick Agnel, has pocketed the gold medal of the Men’s 200m freestyle category at the 2011 Canet En Roussillon.
The Canet En Roussillon is the third stop of the 2011 Mare Nostrum Series that precedes the fourth and last stop, to be held in Monaco.
Olympic Nice Natation’s Agnel claimed the title of the 200m event by posting a winning time of 1 minute and 47.05 seconds. He was 0.97 seconds faster than his following swimmer, Takeshi Matsuda of Japan, who followed him on the podium for the silver medal
submitting a time of 1 minute and 48.02 seconds. Matsuda was 1.78 seconds faster than Australia’s Tommaso D'Orsogna, who touched the wall for the third position in a time of 1 minute and 49.80 seconds.
Yannick won eight gold medals at the 2009 and 2010 European Junior Championships, which included the 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 400m freestyle, 4*100m freestyle relay, 4*200m freestyle relay and the 4*100m medley relay events. He also won three medals
at the 2010 European Championships in Budapest, claiming a gold medal in the 400m freestyle, a silver medal in 4*100m freestyle and a bronze medal in the 4*200m freestyle relay. He also won a gold medal in the 4*100m freestyle relay and a bronze in the 4*200m
freestyle category at the 2010 World Short Course Championships in Dubai.
The champion swimmer was the top contender for the gold medal from the start of the race. He completed the initial lap of his swim in 25.53 seconds against Matsuda’s 25.60 seconds effort. Australian swimmer, D’Orsogna, completed his first lap in the third
fastest time of 25.76 seconds.
In the second lap, Agnel sustained his fastest spot by completing his swim in a time of 52.89 seconds. He was followed by Matsuda and D’Orsogna, who ended their swims in 53.09 and 53.77 seconds, respectively.
In the third lap, Matsuda geared up his swim to engage in a neck-to-neck race with Agnel and finished his swim in 1:20.79 minutes against Agnel’s 1:20.40 minutes. The French swimmer was dominant in the final lap and won the title in a time of 1:47.05 seconds.
The championships will continue for one more day and conclude after the completion of all the swimming events in their respective categories.
