Yannick Lebherz wins Men’s 200m back-stroke final – 2011 German World Championships Selection Trial
Yannick Lebherz conquered the Men’s 200m back-stroke on fifth day of the 2011 German World Championships Selection Trial.
The championship aims towards the selection of top two national swimmers in every event, to finalize the German swimming team that will be participating at the 2011 Shanghai World Championships, this July.
Lebherz won the gold medal of the 100m back-stroke event, by touching the wall in 1:58.00 minutes. The 22-year-old was followed by SG Frankfurt’s Jan-Philip Glania and SSG Saar Max Ritter’s Lucien Haßdenteufel, who occupied the silver and bronze medal, clocking
a time of 1:58.46 and 1:59.89 minutes, respectively.
Yannick remained 6.08 seconds slower than the Aaron Peirsol’s world record of 1:51.92 minutes, made at the 2009 Rome World Championships. His timing was also 3.25 seconds above the European mark of 1:54.75 minutes, held by Russia’s Arkady Vyatchanin. Likewise,
the 22-year-old swimmer failed to improve the German mark of Helge Meeuw by 1.66 seconds.
He was 0.05 seconds away from the second fastest swimmer, Glania in the first lap, as he completed his swim in 27.53 seconds. Glania appeared as the second fastest swimmer on the first turn, posting 27.58 seconds against Lucien’s 27.72 seconds effort.
In the second lap, he gained a slight lead of 0.02 seconds from Glania, finishing his first round in 56.92 seconds against Habdenteufel’s 57.82 seconds. The two of them continued their swimming battle, where Yannick gained a lead of almost one second from
Jan-Philip in the third lap, posting a time of 1:26.73 minutes.
In the final lap, the German champion demonstrated his grueling efforts, touching the wall first in 1:58.00 minutes to claim the national title. Glania, who sprinted his way to the finishing wall in the final lap, failed to cover his lead, and remained 0.46
seconds behind the gold medalist.
Lebherz was extremely excited to have qualified for the 2011 World Championships. The champion expressed his desire of entering the final round of the 200m event at the world titles, saying that he will try to sustain his spot at the upcoming international
meets.
