Yao Jie overpowers Michelle Li to claim Women’s Singles title at Finnish Open 2012
Netherland’s Yao Jie showed her elevated performance as she won the Women’s Singles title after beating Canada’s Michelle Li in the final showdown at Finnish Open 2012 in Finland, on Sunday, April 1.
The World Number 22 Jie, who was the second seed in Women’s Singles draw in Finnish Open, showed wonderful performance and outplayed her third seeded Canadian rival Michelle.
The Dutch played to her maximum potential and remained successful in winning the title match after putting up superb show for 42 minutes.
On the other hand, Michelle played at her best in the whole match but failed to end it up well in both games and lost the match with a tight margin on the score board.
Jie, who remained impressive in the whole tournament and did not lost any game in all of her previous encounters, continued her impressive run and claimed the title.
The opening set of the title match was interesting when both ladies played remarkable badminton and remained close on the board. No one could dominate the pace until the end of opening half.
After the break, both shuttlers continued playing in the similar fashion and reached into the ending phase without setting up any lead.
The score reached at 20-20 when Jie played smart badminton as she took the bird early from all areas and played with aggression. She won the opening set in a thrilling fashion by a 22-20 score on the board.
In the second set, Michelle lifted up her level of play and remained successful in leading the game until the one-minute interval where she was ahead at 11-7.
After the break, Michelle continued playing in the similar impressive manner by keeping the pace at the maximum level. She was in complete control and managed to reach at 19-14.
However, she could not score the ending points as Jie lifter up her level of play and stunned everyone by grabbing seven straight points to bag the set with a margin of 21-19.
Jie emerged as the title winner by ending the final contest in straight games with a 22-20 and 21-19 score on the board.
