Yao Ming Playing for the Chinese??

So I don't get it...if he plays for the NBA doesn't that make him American?

Like could Matumbo play for the African basket ball thing in the Olympics?

I'm confused

  1. Anyone can play in the NBA but you have to be a citizen to play on team usa and good enough. Im not trying to sound mean when i say this but Yao Ming is from China so no duh he is gonna play for his home team not the place where he only plays bball


  2. You must be citizen of a country to play for that country in the Olympics.

  3. Yao is a citizen or national of China. This same concept goes for Manu Ginobili of Argentina, Pau Gasol of Spain, and Steve Nash of Canada. The African-American players, are naturally from america, so they play for Team USA.

  7. Yao Ming is a chinese citizen. His country (China) has him by his little Basket Ball's. He could play for the US but then there would be h**l to pay. I have heard that his checks go the Chinese Government as payment for him be able to leave the country. It may be rumors but I wouldnt s***w with china when your family is still there and under their Communist control of the Peoples Republic of China on the Mainland . Just my thoughts, for what they are worth!!!  DB

  8. Yao Ming was born and raised in China. He also got his passport there. He can play for China, but he doesn't have to. He can also play for America if he was picked.

  9. (sigh) Well since he was born and raised in China then that would make since for him to play for China. Just because he comes over to play NBA then that doesnt make him a Houstonian.

  12. Yao is a Chinese citizen who plays basketball for the Houston Rockets of the NBA in the USA. As a Chinese citizen he can compete for China.
