Yaroslava Shvedova beats Lourdes Dominguez-Lino in round one – Moorilla Hobart International 2013
World number 28, Yaroslava Shvedova, dismissed the 46th ranked Spaniard, Lourdes Dominguez-Lino, in the opening round of the Moorilla Hobart International on Monday. She dumped the 31-year-old Spanish veteran in straight
sets 6-4, 6-1 and took the revenge of the earlier upset that thumped her out in the opening clash of the US Open 2010.
The 25-year-old Kazakh started the proceedings with a successful breakpoint and coupled it with a marvellous serve hold to make it 2-0 in her favour. However, she couldn’t capitalize on the initial onslaught and allowed her opponent
to break serve in the fourth game that equalised the scores at 2-2.
Shvedova, the fourth seed contestant, played a brilliant drop shot in the seventh game that allowed her to clinch the second breakthrough of the match. She again the led the scores and protected herself with a tight serve hold.
Lino couldn’t extract a breakpoint in the remaining portion of the set that drowned her to a trail of one set.
The Kazakh had built a strong momentum in the ending phase of the opening set and carried it further to squeeze a breakthrough that helped her to mount pressure on her rival. She was under the cosh during the first serve game of
the second set but did well to hang on and protect a breakpoint. She wasn’t able to capitalise on her powerful serves and had to dig deep to sustain the lead.
The major downfall for the Spanish professional was witnessed in the fifth game when she handed over a breakpoint to her rival and sunk to a trail of 1-4. Shvedova scuttled past to a massive lead of 5-1 courtesy to a serve hold
and the scoreboard pressure played a major part in forcing Lino to lose another serve game that was the final action from the match.
The Russian doubles specialist, Elena Vesnina, will lock horns with the fourth seed Kazakh in the second round of the event after dispatching the Spanish qualifier, Silvia Soler-Espinosa, in the opening round of the contest. Shvedova
is expected to win the encounter and book a berth in the quarter-final of the tournament.
