Yaroslava Shvedova defeats Su-Wei Hsieh in final qualies – HP Japan Open 2011
Kazakh Yaroslava Shvedova defeated Taipei Su-Wei Hsieh in the final qualies of the HP Japan Open 2011. The players battled it out on the outdoor hard courts of the Utsubo Tennis Center in Osaka, Japan. It took Shvedova just sixty
three minutes to conquer the Taipei in straight sets of 6-2, 6-4 on the 10th of October 2011.
The first round of the match was initiated by Hsieh after she had won t he service toss and even though, she tried to battle a deuce, she was unable to win on her first serve. Mean while, Shvedova had capitalized on the mini break
and as she held serve in the second game, she placed herself on the scoreboard at 2-0. The two players held serve in the following two games but it wasn’t until the third game that Hsieh won on her serve.
Shvedova played amazingly and put pressure on her opponent and as she did, Hsieh erred and endorsed another game to Shvedova. As Shvedova again held serve, she was now leading with a 5-1 but she was unable to break her opponent
in the next game. Although, the Taipei tried to reduce the deficit to 2-5, she was not able to close in on the gap. In the eighth game Shvedova smashed a beautiful backhand shot and clogged the opening set.
Serving for the second set was again Hsieh but this time she was able to win a game on her service game and rotated the scoreboard to 1-0. Not wanting Hsieh to take a lead, Shvedova too held her serve and placed herself beside
Hsieh on the scoreboard at 1-1. In the third game the 25 year-old Taipei battled a deuce but was unsuccessful in bagging a game and as she double faulted on her second serve, she gifted away a game to Shvedova.
For the following three games the players held serve and the scoreboard had shifted to 4-2 with Shvedova taking the lead. In the seventh and eighth game the players broke each other back-to-back and although, Hsieh again tried
to reduce the deficit, she was still two breaks and a game down at 3-5. Service changed and it was Hsieh’s turn to serve and she held serve in the ninth game to further close in t he gap at 4-5 but as Shvedova served for the match, she smashed a marvellous
forehand winner down the line to secure a place in the main draw of the event.
