Yaroslava Shvedova disposes Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to clear round one – Kremlin Cup 2012
World number 29, Yaroslava Shvedova, disposed the 35th ranked Russian, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, in the opening round of the Kremlin Cup on Tuesday. She equalized the head-to-head scores with 2-2 by registering straight
sets 6-2, 6-2 win in Moscow. It was classic one-sided onslaught from the 25-year-old Kazakh who rounded off the tough draw in just 74 minutes.
The rare golden set record holder in continuing to break through the world ranks and is just one spot lower than her career high ranking. She can improve it in the current tournament and the professional photographer from Kazakhstan
can once again catch the limelight of the big stage. Commenting about her emphatic win, Shvedova said, “It was a good match and I played very well, everything I tried to do was coming off and I was playing some unbelievable shots. I was very focused for the
whole match and tried to play just one point at a time.”
Pavlyuchenkova was thumped on the back foot right from the word go. The Kazakh won two points on her serve and later on bagged the first breakthrough to take the lead. She held the following game with ease to make it 2-0 in her
favour. It was a terrific start which was backed by some enthralling hard-hitting from Shvedova. She broke serve in the fifth game of the match as well and that allowed her to build a monumental lead of 5-1. The Russian failed to break serve and lost the first
phase in quick succession.
Shvedova began the second set with an all round onslaught. She grabbed three breakpoints in a row and held her serve twice in between to make it 5-1 in her favour. She had dropped a breakpoint in the fourth game but that didn’t
hurt her at all because she was on roll and the 21-year-old Russian was all over the place. A serve hold for both players was good enough for Shvedova to pull curtains for the Russian competitor and book a berth in the second round of the contest. She will
be facing the winner of the all-Russian clash between Maria Kirilenko and Elena Vesnina.
