Yaroslava Shvedova miraculously gets a direct entry into London Olympics – Tennis News
One Grand Slam tournament can change luck for someone. This phenomenon has been proven correct by the Kazakh superstar, Yaroslava Shvedova, who stunned everyone by reaching the quarter-final of the Roland Garros French. She started
the tournament all the way from the qualifiers defeated the likes of Romanian professional, Elena Bogdan, in the first round. She continued to impress with her performance especially after the Spanish superstar, Carla Suarez Navarro, was shown her way back
home in the third round after straight sets battering.
Everyone thought that it was the end of the cameo for the Kazakh qualifier because the defending champion, Li Na, was up next for her. She lost the opening set and the speculations of the viewers were further confirmed but the
jaw-dropping performance in the following two sets posting scores of 6-2, 6-0 just left the crowd stunned. The Chinese number one was in disbelief and couldn’t understand what had happened to her but she was ousted embarrassingly by the qualifier in the fourth
round.
Shvedova was leading the final set 4-2 against the fourth seed Czech, Petra Kvitova in the quarter-final battle but couldn’t find the willpower to fight anymore. She was fatigued out rather being beaten but the world class performance
earned her a direct entry into the London Olympics. She jumped to 62nd rank in the world from 142nd spot. She becomes the biggest mover in the new edition of the rankings posted by the Women Tennis Association.
A marvellous achievement must have boosted her morale and now she is no more an upset queen because she is capable of playing excellent tennis on her day. She is the former world number 29 so anything can be expected of her. However,
such a successful Grand Slam tournament just before the finalization of the London Olympics list is a miracle if nothing else.
She was ecstatic at her performance and received a standing ovation when for her efforts throughout the tournament. She left the arena with smile on her face but deep down in the heart, she knew she had Kvitova in her bag if she
had a bit more power left in her. However, London Olympics participation is a biggest achievement and she must be proud of it.
