Yaroslava Shvedova registers a first ‘golden egg’ of women tennis history – Tennis News
World number 65, Yaroslava Shvedova, became the first ever women in the 44 years history of women tennis to register a ‘golden egg’ in a match. She was up against the 10th ranked Italian, Sara Errani, in the third round of the Wimbledon Championships when she won the first set; winning all 24 points on the trot to register a monumental triumph. Errani was unable to win a single point throughout the opening set.
An incredible performance from the 24-year-old Kazakh wildcard entrant makes her the only women to win a set without losing a single point. Errani was completely slaughtered in all departments and she confessed that in the post-match interview stating, “Apparently, it's the biggest news of the day: I lost a set without winning a point; unbelievable. She was impossible to play against. I don't even feel like I played terribly. She just was hitting winners from every part of the court."
Shvedova, however, didn’t know that she had achieved such an emphatic milestone before she was told by her coach in the locker room. She stated, “I only realized after the match in the gym when my coach told me. I didn't believe him - I thought it must be a mistake. I wasn't concentrating on the statistics during the match. I was just playing point by point. I was just thinking that I played a good set. I'm the first woman to make a golden egg!"
The opening set finished off in just 15 minutes. Spectators were already flocking in the arena and they witnessed the Kazakh contestant a set ahead of her rival. No one has ever seen such a crushing defeat in the opening set of a match and that too from an inferior ranked contestant in Grand Slam Championship. This achievement will definitely stay in the history books for a long period of time because such monumental accomplishments are seen once in a lifetime.
Errani lost the second set 4-6 in just over 42 minutes and went out of the Wimbledon Championships a lot earlier than expected. She was the finalist at the Roland Garros French Open but couldn’t handle the staggering assault of Shvedova on Saturday.
Shvedova will be up against the American number one, Serena Williams, in the battle for a place in the last eight of the tournament. Williams smashed 23 aces in her marathon third round match against Jie Zheng to book a date with the 24-year-old Kazakh. It is going to be another eye-catching event that will take place on the eve of Sunday.
