Qualifying 20th seed, Yaroslava Shvedova, upset the Czech star, Andrea Hlavackova, in straight sets at the qualifying competition of the Family Circle Cup 2012 on Sunday. She penned down a 7-6(5), 7-5 victory against the world number 124 to reach
the main draw of this green clay court event held in Charleston, United States.
The Kazakh got the better of Hlavackova with two breaks of serve in almost two hours. Facing each other for the first time, she convincingly booked a spot in the main draw of this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier event.
The 24-year-old made a shaky start at the Family Circle Tennis Center and lost her opening serve to go 0-2 down. However, she remained focused and grabbed her break back in the very next game. Shvedova then plucked her remaining serves with poise and took
the set to a tie-breaker. She edged past the Czech in it and clinched the opener with a 7-6(5) score line.
Shvedova carried her winning ways in the proceeding set and swiped in her entire serves after blocking both breakpoints she came across. The Kazakh got the breakthrough in the last game and sealed the set by winning seven games to five. She capitalised on
one out of three break opportunities to earn the limelight.
Overall, the Kazakh outshined her higher ranked challenger completely. She fired nine aces, spilled fewer double faults and finished the match with 90 points. Shvedova also clobbered a slightly higher first serve share of 72 per cent as opposed to the Czech’s
70 per cent and amazingly availed 43 out of 60 points on it.
America’s Melanie Oudin also registered an upset victory against the qualifying 22nd seed, Petra Rampre. The 20-year-old was broken down early in the set to subsequently go 1-3 down. However, she made a fitting reply and reeled off the following
five games successively, ultimately winning the opening set with a 6-3 win.
Oudin stormed into the following set and stroke out the opening three games in a row with two breaks of serve. Despite losing her serve in the fourth game, she cashed in another break opportunity and clinched the set with a 6-2 score line.
