Yaroslava Shvedova’s tough time with injuries is over – Tennis News
World number 142, Yaroslava Shvedova, has impressed a lot in the Roland Garros French Open this year with her smart performances from the qualifying stage to the quarter-finals of the tournament. She is up against the fourth seed
Czech, Petra Kvitova. However, she has nothing to lose because what she has done was not expected of her.
She rose from the qualifying stage defeating the likes of Romanian starlet, Elena Bogdan; trashed the main round competitor, the Luxembourgian professional, Mandy Minella. She then ousted the Swede star, Sofia Arvidsson, in the
second round. Her major victories came in the third and fourth round when she stunned the Spanish superstar, Carla Suarez Navarro and the defending champion, Li Na. The exit of Li at the hands of the Kazakh qualifier was the biggest shocking news that shook
the world with surprise and Asians with grief.
Talking about her difficult times in the past, she said, “I had the injury and surgery right after Australia. I was recovering a very long time and when I came back my knee was bothering me for half a year. Then my coach left,
and I had some tough periods mentally. I was very down and lonely. I was playing doubles but lost all my singles points.”
However, the recovery started in September 2011. She further added, “Since September I got a new coach (Emiliano Redondi) and he helped me out a lot. For this year we set a goal to get my ranking back, and I was working hard. Even
though it was nice atmosphere and there were no superstars and we were like big a big family.”
Injuries have always bothered her. She is the former world number 29 but that was way back in June 2010. Since then she has been hurt with niggling injuries but now she is fit and up amongst the elite players fighting for the Grand
Slam title. If she manages to do that the history will repeat for the straight second year as Li was the underdog last year who stepped up her game and stunned everyone with a championship title in Paris.
