Yaroslava Vyacheslavovna Shvedova: A look at U.S. Open 2010 doubles champ
Born on September 12, 1987 in the city of Moscow, Yaroslava Vyacheslavovna Shvedova is a professional tennis player from Russia. The 23-year-old Shvedova achieved her career high rankings of world number twenty nine back in June this year. She has so far captured one WTA singles trophy; three ITF Women's Circuit singles crowns and three doubles titles, which includes this season’s grass court Grand slam as well as the United States Open women’s doubles crown in New York. The Russian was taught the game of tennis when she was just six years old by her father, who also serves as the current coach of Shvedova. She has so far reached the quarter-final round of the French Open singles tennis tournament this year in Roland Garros.
Yaroslava was born to parents Vyacheslav and Nurzia in Moscow. She has one brother called Pavel who is a student in a high school. The Russian started playing the game when she was just eight years old under the supervision of her father who has also supported his daughter in improving her game over the years. Even though, Shvedova is a Russian-born player and currently resides in Moscow, she changed her nationality to Kazakhstani two years ago as part of Russia’s attempt to upgrade its sporting profile.
As far as her 2010 performances are concerned, the Russian tennis player started the season by playing at the 2010 Sony Ericsson Open which was held in Miami, as her first tournament of the year. Shvedova managed to win her opening round match against a wild card entrant Ajla Tomljanovic in a total of three sets. The final match score was 6–7(1), 7–6(3), 7–5. The 23-year-old then got the better of Sabine Lisicki in the second round after she withdrew whilst trailing 3–6, 1–0. In the next round, Yaroslava progressed versus an unseeded foe, Andrea Petkovic by triumphing in another tight clash in a total of three sets. The final match score was 6–0, 5–7, 7–5. She however, was taken down in the fourth round of the championship by the sixth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska in a two-setter clash. The final match score was 6–1, 6–4.
At the 2010 Barcelona Ladies Open tennis tournament, Yaroslava hammered down Anabel Medina Garrigues in the opening round in a total of two sets before upsetting Maria Kirilenko, a fourth-seeded player in the second round. The final match score was 4–6, 6–2, 6–2. Next, the Russian toppled Iveta Benesova in a two-setter clash before falling to the 2010 French Open winner, Francesca Schiavone in the semi-final round in straight sets.
The Moscow resident enjoyed her best career result this year at the French Open tennis championship. She successfully made her way into the quarterfinal round in the singles competition. Shvedova outlasted the eight-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska on her way into the quarters. Being the only unseeded player in the quarters at the French Open, the Russian was finally surpassed by the fourth-seeded Jelena Jankovic in a total of two sets. The final match score was 7–5, 6–4. In mixed doubles competition, Yaroslava was teamed up with Julian Knowle from Austria and successfully made her way into the finals, defeating Leander Paes and Cara Black on her way. They however, fell to Nenad Zimonjic and Katarina Srebotnik after a thrilling two-setter clash. The final match score was 4–6, 7–6(5), [11–9].
At the 2010 Wimbledon tournament, Shvedova stunned every one by winning the doubles title after beating Vera Zvonareva and Elena Vesnina in the title battle. The final match score was 7–6(6), 6–2.
In a more recent news, the Russian tennis player, Yaroslava Vyacheslavovna Shvedova has won the United States Open Women’s doubles crown along with her partner Vania King, beating Liezel Huber and Nadia Petrova in a total of three sets. The final match score was 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7/4).
