Pakistani cricketer Yasir Hameed has apologized to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for violating the code of conduct by participating in a controversial interview with British tabloid
News of the World.
"I have told the board I am sorry for the interview which caused a lot of damage to Pakistan cricket and myself as well," Hameed said.
In September 2010, during http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755’s tour of England and the initial outbreak of the infamous spot-fixing scandal involving Pakistani players,
The News of the World released the secretly taped video interview with Hameed. In the interview, Hameed told undercover reporters that Pakistani players were regularly involved in match-fixing.
"They were doing it (fixing) in almost every match," Hameed said in the interview. "God knows what they were up to. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Scotland-c756 Yard was after them for ages. It makes me angry because I'm playing my best and they are trying to lose."
The interview was released by News of the World just two days after Pakistani players Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer were suspended by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on charges of spot-fixing. After
the interview, Hameed was dropped from Pakistan’s ODI squad in England and was not considered for the team’s tour of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shahid-Afridi-c2482 who called Hameed "unreliable".
After the interview’s release, Hameed initially denied having spoken to the tabloid. However, he then admitted that he had indeed spoken to the reporters, but had not been aware of their true identity. Hameed said he had been given
the impression that he was meeting with airline representatives who were interested in signing him for an endorsement deal. He also maintained that in response to their questions about match-fixing, he did not reveal anything more than what he "had already
read in the newspapers."
Hameed, who has played 25 Tests and 56 ODIs for Pakistan, met with PCB Chairman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ijaz-Butt-c64128 and members of the board’s integrity committee in Lahore on Thursday.
"I have told the board that, even though it was a trap set to implicate me by the newspaper, I had violated the code of conduct by not informing the team management about my meeting with them," he said.
"I was trapped into it but I should not have said all that before a stranger and I apologise to all the players who were hurt because of that."
