  1. A yawn is a reflex of deep inhalation and exhalation of breath.

Yawning is associated with tiredness, stress, overwork, lack of stimulation, or boredom. Yawning can also be a powerful non-verbal message with several possible meanings, depending on the circumstances. In humans, yawning has the infectious quality, i.e. seeing a person yawning, or just thinking of yawning, can trigger yawning which is a typical example for positive feedback.

The exact causes of yawning are still undetermined. The claim that yawning is caused by lack of oxygen has not been substantiated scientifically. Some claim that yawning is not caused by lack of oxygen, for the reason that yawning allegedly reduces oxygen intake compared to normal respiration.Another speculated reason for yawning is nervousness and is also claimed to help increase the state of alertness of a person - paratroopers have been noted to yawn in the moments before they exit the aircraft.

  2. Poster #2 has good points. I would add that if the yawning is excessive it is indicative of a possible underlying condition that you should get checked out.

  3. You yawn when your body is low on oxygen and it needs more. You yawn when your body is relaxed or tired. You can prevent it by staying active and sleeping well.

  4. Yawn is important because it helps you get more oxygen for the brain and to the body. It usually happens when you are lack of oxygen.

    I hope this helps. =)
