  1. Take the motorcycle basic riders course from the Motorcycle safety foundation in your state. They will teach you how to ride a motorcycle safely. No prior experience is nessesary, and it will make you a much safer rider. It only takes a few days, and once you've completed it, you will have all the confidence you need to handle the scooter.

  2. In most provinces/states, you won't have to take a driven test. You will only have to write a written test. Your State/Province road commission should have a library which contains books on motor vehicles, motorcycles and mopeds.

  3. It's still a motorcycle, in spite of the silly name.

Look for a basic riders course, if they available in your area. (Call the DMV or DOT in your area, they can usually hook you up with the MSF instructors.)

See if you can take the course and get the <15 year old, moped only license>, with completion/passing of the course.

If they are are reluctant to do that, remind them that you WILL get a license and WILL ride the zuma even if they never let you take the course!

What's better, educated, trained or ignorant and on the road and in charge of lethal machinery?

The same goes for your father, if he had not expected to get a bill for training, remind him that you COULD get hurt, and the training may make all the difference. (Also it is usually good for a discount on the insurance bill.  That will cheer him back up!)

I'm sure you will get a proper dose of advice from your dad, about riding carefully, paying attention to traffic and street conditions, so I won't repeat it here.  Remember this ONE SIMPLE thing: If you are not completely healthy, or are fatigued, even distracted by events at school, if you do not feel up to the challenge, call him to come pick you up!

He will b**** and moan as all parent do, but you will be home safe, and isn't that what he wants, after all is said and done?

  4. Small scooters and motorcycles are becoming popular with college students in my town.  I guess most drivers aren't used to seeing scooters so you have to try to be seen , and you have to pretend that you are invisible.  I don't know that anything online will be of any use to you before you have practical experience.

    Ride safe, have fun.

  5. If you can ride a bicycle, a Zuma will be very much like that.  Think of it as a bike that you don't have to pedal.  It doesn't weigh much more than a bicycle, and with those little wheels it's even more stable than a bicycle.

You can take the MSF course if you like, actually it might help, but the Zuma is a machine that anyone can hop on and ride off.

You're going to get a helmet, right?  Very important. Also it would be nice to have a pair of gloves, because if you ever fall off, even just a minor spill, you instinctively put your hands out in front of you.

But really, don't worry about it, you'll be fine.
