I am getting a guinea pig probably this coming weekend or during the next week. But first I have questions.

1. I have a rabbit cage (but it has a solid floor, there is no holes) will this be sufficent space?

2. If not..would it be better to buy a cage from PetCo or build a cage? And what are some other ideas to make a cage out of besides a C&C cage? It absolutely needs a cover, I have cats.

3. How much will this all cost me?

4. What are some cute names? I have a thing where I don't name my animals people names if that helps.

5. Girl or Boy?

  1. 1.it would be a good cage but if it is a wire cage no cause guinea pigs dont have strong feet like rabbits and it could hurt the guinea pigs feet and make sure its spacey

2.i recommend you to buy a cage from petco cause to make a c&c cage or other cage you need a lot of woog, plastic,or other materials

3.a good cage from petco may cost approximedatly $30 to $100 or more and a home made cage would cost like $50 cause of the plastic or wood

    4.for males,lucky,honey,pluto,and for females,molly,daffy,twinkle

5.males or females both are cute but be sure that if you buy  female they dont sell it to you pregnet but either way females ormales they are both cute

  2. Aww. I love my guinea pigs.  I have two.  They can live alone but you would need to be with them a lot every day.  It is better for them to be in pairs though since they are very social animals.  Two females would be best since two males may fight.  A rabbit cage would be perfect.  You want a solid floor because a wire bottom will give guinea pigs sores on their feet.  A guinea pig s hould cost between $30-40.  You already have a cage.  Then you just need food, hay, vitamins, chew sticks, and an igloo for privacy.  You will probably spend around $60 or closer to $100 if you get two piggies which you should.  Mine are named Gizmo and Lily.

  3. First of all, guinea pigs must NEVER live alone. They are heard animals, and having others of thier own kind is one of their basic needs. It is AS important as feeding the mhealthy food, or having a god cage. Do not keep one alone. Two is not that much more expensive. If you will not get two, you can't get any.

    1. The minimum sized cage for two guinea pigs is 50"x30". Measure your rabbit cage in inches, and compare. If it is too small, you don't need to buy one. I have personally never seen a proper-sized guinea pigs cage at a pet store. Instead, most great piggy owners make C&C cages. I strongly urge you to use these. I'm not sure why you want 'other idea' while C&C cages are perfect already...

    3. A C&C will cost $30-50 depending on where you buy the supplies.

    4. I suggest you firstt get the piggies, and get to know them and their personalities. Then name them. Some ideas http://exoticpets.about.com/cs/namelists...

    5. It does not matter one single bit. One is not any better than another. Males will sometimes pee a lot more, and have a slightly muskier smell, but over all they are the same.

if you do end up using the rabbit cage, make sure you have plenty of bedding (not pine shaving bedding!). A layer of newspaper on the bottom, and some suitable bedding on the top.

    2. As long as the cage is large enough and fits all the requirements on the website above, you should be fine.

    3. Not much at all. Guinea Pigs are inexpensive, but I do not recommend buying one from a pet store, they often carry diseases from mistreatment and lack of space. Get a guinea pig from a shelter.

I don't think naming is very important, I call my piggy alot of different nicknames (Pumpkin, Chuck Spudman, Guinea, Chubby, Pudge) even though his real name is Huckleberry.

    5. This doesn't really matter, it all depends on the individuals character, I do not recommend getting a neutered or spayed pig though.

a few other points not listed

    > Timothy hay is very essential for their diets. buy it in abundance, it is pretty cheap and should be found at most pet stores.

    > Too much Calcium is bad for guinea pigs, and can cause kidney stones which often lead to fatalities. so watch calcium intake!

    > Make sure you give it space the first two days and try not to handle. This will allow your pig to get used to it's surroundings. Shyness at first is totally normal, mine didn't warm up to me for a couple weeks! Always be gentle with it, and try not to drop it. lol

The rest should be on these websites which I found very helpful

Good Luck! you will love it I promise!

  5. rabbit cage would be ideal...but i'd go for the female, the males can impact as they get older and you have to help them go p**p. i learned this with experience. i had two boys together who ripped one another apart and both of them impacted. next time i got 2 girls and they live in peace, no fighting. funny thing i have noticed is the more rounder, fatter breeds, are more docile than the longer thin ones. the rounder ones always liked to come up and snuggle in and eat out of your hand but the thinner ones would hide away till u were a good distance from them before coming out to eat.
